jellies
Jellyfish vs. Jellies. With no bones, no brains, and no blood, jellies aren’t fish at all. “While they’re best known for their sting, sea jellies play a pivotal role in the ocean’s ecosystem,” says Jellies Collection manager Mark Schick at the Shed Aquarium, Chicago, IL. Jellies have staying power. They’ve survived — and thrived — in the Earth’s oceans for more than 500 million years. It is a dazzling array of diverse species that have extended their stay at Shedd’s special exhibit, Jellies. It turns out they all travel well, but depending on where they arrive, they can inspire awe or destroy an ecosystem. Simple bell-shaped forms are the result of complex biological processes and delicate frills that harbor tiny venomous harpoons that paralyze the viewer to staying for hours.
